NHS Lung Health Check
Each year in the North East, smoking causes over 5,500 early deaths. When it comes to lung health, spotting problems early can make a big difference.
During 2020, a new NHS lung health programme will be rolled out across Newcastle and Gateshead and run for four years.
If you are aged 55 to 74 and your GP has a record of you being a smoker or having ever smoked, your GP Practice will invite you by letter for your FREE NHS Lung Health Check. Think of it as an MOT for your lungs.
The check will take place in mobile units that will be based in community locations throughout Newcastle and Gateshead. Inside these units, specialist lung health check nurses will carry out the lung health checks, which will include:
- A general discussion about your breathing and overall health
- A breathing test (known as spirometry)
- And, in some cases, a low-dose CT scan delivered there and then
When you get your invite, don’t ignore it! Get your FREE Lung Health Check.
If you think your GP is unlikely to have a record of you smoking or ever smoked, please check at your next appointment.
